Implications of the Dead Sea Scrolls and other Historical Analysis on the Reliability of the Bible
Has our Bible been corrupted by additions and omissions over time such that it is not the authentic and reliable Word of God? Several religious movements and false doctrines are premised on this claim. It is also a popular charge by both skeptics and liberal clerics. But is it true? Come and learn the exciting scientific and historical discoveries, such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, that repudiate this claim. Bob Davis will give us another way to give a reason for the hope you have in Christ (I Peter 3:15).

The Worldview Challenge
Christian apologists frequently find themselves answering the same objections over and over, with critics tending to focus on specific attacks, like the age of the universe or the problem of evil. While we should certainly be answering these objections, I believe we need to move away from being merely defensive to explaining the coherence of the Christian worldview and challenging critics to explain and defend their own worldviews. This is where Christianity has the advantage. The Christian worldview coherently explains origins, the physical world, human nature, and morality, all while inspiring genuine human progress and hope for the future. What other worldview can boast the same? In this talk, I’ll explain why this challenge can be a powerful apologetic tool, because no other worldview—especially no atheistic worldview—can match the explanatory and inspirational power of Christianity.

Escaping the Beginning?
The Bible clearly speaks of a beginning to everything. A number of prominent scientists argue that latest and greatest models say the universe has existed forever, or that even if it began it needed no cause. How are we as Christians to process this apparent conflict? This talk will investigate the reasons to think the universe had a beginning, how to understand these latest challenges and make a strong case that the universe did indeed have a beginning that points toward the God of the Bible.

Star of Wonder, Star of Light?
With the approach of the Christmas season, talk among Christians will often turn to the star that announced the birth of Jesus to the Maji. But was it a star or some other celestial object such as a conjunction of planets or a comet as commonly depicted in some ancient paintings? Ed undertook a year long study of the current scholarship regarding the star over Bethlehem as mentioned in Matthew 2:1-12. In this talk, Ed will present the theories put forth by several researchers using modern astronomy software to narrow down the celestial candidates that spurred the Magi to travel hundreds of miles to Bethlehem to worship the new King.

God created Humans. Can humans duplicate humans using artificial intelligence (AI)? Although AI has and will continue to perform amazing feats, the answer is no. Not now. Not ever. AI will never understand, be sentient, or display creativity. Despite recent headlines to the contrary, computer science and neuroscience places foundational restrictions on the performance of artificial intelligence. Lastly, the rise of the AI church will be scrutinized.

“How Should We Look at Genesis 1?”
(Video available at RTB Austin-Chapter YouTube Channel)
Few chapters in the Bible inspire wonder and controversy like Genesis 1. Genesis 1 undeniably makes claims about the origin and development of the world and life on Earth. Are those claims intended to reflect the scientifically discoverable truth about our physical world? Or are we imposing a modern, Western view on an ancient Near Eastern text whose purpose has nothing to do with the material world? In this lecture, we’ll compare two very different interpretations of Genesis 1 – ancient and supernatural vs. modern views and material – and try to make sense of these seemingly conflicting views.

“The Theology of String Theory”
(Video available at RTB Austin-Chapter YouTube Channel)
Building on the multidimensional requirements of big bang cosmology, and now string theory, we will take a fresh look at some of the biblical paradoxes which have confounded Bible scholars for centuries. This fresh multidimensional perspective could help to shed light and add clarification in regard to a handful of divisive biblical and theological issues. Previous issues we were required to merely accept by faith can now be viewed as scientifically plausible. Even for Bible veterans many of these will prove to be thought-provoking and eye opening concepts.

“The Science of Sex for Apologetics & Evangelism ”
(Video available at RTB Austin-Chapter YouTube Channel)
This presentation focuses on the biology of sex and how science supports the biblical model of monogamous heterosexual relationships. I will first discuss how genes and hormones determine a person’s sex, which is much more complex for intersex cases. I then discuss the psychology of relationships and how our brains are wired to connect with others, but how sex plays a unique role in connecting. I then outline the research showing how increased number of sexual partners is related to psychological distress and higher divorce rates. My hope is that the presentation will help people be more informed on these topics so that they are more empathetic toward sexual minorities and sexual sin while at the same time, have more reasons to hold on to their Christian convictions.

Prayer and Miracles: Does Prayer Work (Part 1)
(Video available at RTB Austin-Chapter YouTube Channel)
Prayer studies in the 1980’s and 1990’s showed a statistical improvement in the health of patients receiving intercessory prayer from others. These studies were criticized with their conclusions and methodologies questioned by many skeptics. In 2006 another prayer study, considered to be more rigorous and legitimate by skeptics and atheists, found a very small statistical improvement in the health of patients who DID NOT receive intercessory prayer. Does prayer work? We will take a look at these studies as well as the definition and purpose of prayer as we attempt to answer this question.

Certain politicians and scientists, however, insist that our only option for sustaining climate stability are draconian cuts in both the world economy and standard of living. Based on biblical principles of creation management, I will show how climate stability can be sustained while enhancing the world’s ecosystems and boosting the economic wellbeing and standard of living of all the peoples of the world. I will allow times for Q&A.

“Prayer and Miracles: Is It Rational To Believe In Miracles? (Part II)
(Video available at RTB Austin-Chapter YouTube Channel)
The Enlightenment was an intellectual and philosophical revolution which emerged in the 17th and 18th centuries. Also known as the Age of Reason, since then many have more and more adopted the philosophy of Naturalism, the belief that all events can be explained via the laws of nature, and eschew any notions of the super-natural. Scottish philosopher David Hume is often given credit for undermining any possible belief in miracles. Is it rational to believe in miracles today? In this presentation we will attempt to address this question by looking at events in which the laws of nature may be powerless to explain.

What Happens When You Die: A scientific Perspective
(Video available at RTB Austin-Chapter YouTube Channel)
The discovery in the 1960’s of new techniques to resuscitate people who die in hospital emergency rooms (i.e. no heartbeat, no brain waves and no breathing) has created remarkable opportunities to explore what happens to us when we die. This presentation will highlight what we have learned about human nature from this data. Are we a physical body that ceases to exist when we die physically or an embodied spirit that lives on after our physical body dies? Previously such questions could only be addressed by philosophers or religious ministers. Today scientists are providing essential information to this conversation.

Intro to Biblical Apologetics
(Video available at RTB Austin-Chapter YouTube Channel)
As Christians, we are told to share our faith, encouraged to learn how to answer objections. We've seen bold apologists quote 1 Peter 3:15 and shoot down every arrogant objection in debates before packed audiences and conclude that it isn't our 'gifting.' But if defending the faith is for a select few 'gifted' Christians, why did Peter exhort all of us to be prepared to give an answer for the hope within us? Let's explore his message to us. We will see his encouragement and his instructions on how to defend our faith in ways that don't require a debate. Through a study of the entire verse and its context, and from personal stories, we will learn WHY we should defend our faith, and HOW to defend it winsomely, as Christ did so often in the Gospels. We will see how our motivation plays a critical role; how to let Christ, rather than our ego, shine through; and who has the responsibility of saving souls.

What is Science?
Many scientists claim that Science has replaced religion as the source of ultimate truth about our world. Thus, it is worthwhile to examine this claim. What is science? How did it get here? What assumptions does it make? Is it worldview neutral as many claim? As a professional scientist and science educator, I have seen first hand that we do NOT teach this to our students, except in optional electives that are not advertised well. Therefore, we have generations of scientists growing up with unclear understandings of the philosophy and history of their own field, and it is affecting the quality of the scientific endeavor.

Biblical Objectivity, the Ladder of Abstraction and How to be Salt not Sugar
The mainstream press still sees the evolution debate as one of science vs. religion, but it’s really science vs. science (actually, good science vs. scientism). How can we help journalists go beyond faulty presuppositions that affect not only writing about evolution but dozens of other subjects? Several practices of World magazine, each of which we explain with a metaphor, might help our thinking: Biblical objectivity (using a whitewater rapids metaphor), street-level reporting (a “ladder of abstraction” metaphor), and investigative journalism (a “salt, not sugar” metaphor). I’ll explain each of those and apply them to the evolution debate.

Unequivocating Evolution
In this talk I examine the claim that there is more evidence for evolution than that the Earth revolves around the Sun. In it we consider how strong or weak the scientific data is for supporting five different kinds of evolution: chemical evolution, microevolution, microbial evolution, speciation, and macroevolution. I highlight the need to distinguish between data-driven science and philosophically-driven interpretations in regard to the conflict between evolution and faith. We’ll look at how to draw conclusions based on the data, rather than a philosophical paradigm, as to which categories of evolution are well evidenced and which are still challenges to a complete Neo Darwinian account for the history of life on Earth.

Do Nutrition Scientists and the Bible Agree on What Constitutes a Healthy Diet?”
Where the Scripture and Nutrition Science Agree. - YouTube
Christians, of all people, ought to carefully reflect on how we care for our bodies. Part of that care entails that we eat, exercise, sleep, and live with the awareness that we are not only keeping our bodies healthy but also honoring the temple of the Holy Spirit. But with all the conflicting advice online, in the press, and on TV touting the health benefits of various diets, how do we know if a particular diet honors God? The Very Latest in Hominid Discoveries
The prevailing view of human origins is steeped in the evolutionary paradigm. Yet an increasing number of scientific studies relating to the hominids from primatology, physical anthropology, and archeology are challenging the standard evolutionary view. In other words, there is emerging scientific evidence for human uniqueness and exceptionalism. This presentation suggests a way to integrate these emerging scientific insights and the biblical accounts of human origins and, in doing so, demonstrates the scientific credibility of a biblical understanding of humanity.

The God of the Gaps Argument: Best Explanation or Fallacy?
Historically, naturalists have accused theists of invoking God to explain gaps in our present understanding and knowledge of certain phenomena. Christian Apologetics – The Basics
RTB’s primary focus is in the arena of science apologetics, “demonstrating that sound reason and scientific research . . . support . . . the Christian faith.” The term apologetics is derived from the Greek word apologia and means to “speak in defense.” Christian apologetics is a defense of the Christian faith and addresses a wide range of subjects including science, history, philosophy, art, literature, and scripture. Dark Matter, Dark Energy & Genesis
To most people, Genesis 1:3-4 appears simple and obvious; God created light and, as a result, shadows were formed. But, I don't believe that is what the Bible is trying to tell us. People often don’t grasp the complete and powerful messages of Genesis, because it’s easy to miss some of the important subtleties of the Bible. The darkness Genesis talks about is not merely the absence of light, it is something in its own right. Modern physics has provided intriguing evidence to support this. In my presentation, I will explore the relationship between the darkness described in Genesis and the physical dark side of the universe -- dark matter and dark energy -- and show that they are likely one and the same.

The Rare Earth Hypothesis
The presentation will examine the Rare Earth Hypothesis, which implies that the origin of life and biological complexity, e.g. intelligent being, requires an improbable combination of astrophysical and geological events and circumstances. The hypothesis argues that complex extraterrestrial life is a very improbable phenomenon and likely to be extremely rare. An alternative view sometimes referred to as the Copernican principle, and proposed by Carl Sagan among others, holds that Earth is a typical rocky planet in a typical planetary system, located in a non-exceptional region of a common spiral galaxy.

Apologetics 101
In 2012 John Murphy debated Brian Bolton, professor emeritus of the University of Arkansas, in Georgetown Texas. Mr. Murphy will discuss the experience and talk about some of the preparation and behind-the-scenes details which contributed to his debate. We will then watch a portion of a debate between Dr. Hugh Ross of Reasons to Believe and Professor Harry Nelson of US Santa Barbara. In this interactive experience audience members will be encouraged to critique each speaker by discussing the strengths and weaknesses of each presentation and further consider the arguments some might offer in response.

Is There a Moral Law?
Planned Parenthood. ISIS. Police being murdered. Are these things actually wrong or just evolutionary adaptations or societal preferences? If there is a moral law how would we know and upon who or what would it be based? The answers offered by a materialistic worldview and a Christian worldview will be compared and contrasted.

In Defense of Dualism: An Argument for Body and Soul
Substance dualism is the idea that we are not simply material creatures, but that we consist of a body and a soul. This concept of dualism is very widely held among the public; it permeates our culture and the history of human existence. However, with the advance of science, this position has been shoved into the corner and labeled nothing more than “folk psychology” by many in academia. Mr. Murphy will review many of the critiques and offer a positive response in “In Defense of Dualism”.

The Twin Pillars of Young-Earth Creation - A Theological Perspective
Have you ever had a conversation with a believer who adamantly holds to a Young-Earth Creation (YEC) view even when you suspect they do not find the science supporting it all that compelling? What really undergirds the YEC view and drives concepts like the “appearance of age,” global flood geology and rapid evolution paradigms in spite of overwhelming scientific evidence to the contrary? Mr. Smith will examine the underlying theological beliefs that drive these views and provide an approach to addressing them while maintaining core beliefs of inerrancy, original pair and divine creation.

What is Science?
Many scientists claim that Science has replaced religion as the source of ultimate truth about our world. Thus, it is worthwhile to examine this claim. What is science? How did it get here? What assumptions does it make? Is it worldview neutral as many claim? As a professional scientist and science educator, I have seen firsthand that we do NOT teach this to our students, except in optional electives that are not advertised well. Therefore, we have generations of scientists growing up with unclear understandings of the philosophy and history of their own field, and it is affecting the quality of the scientific endeavor.

Three Questions
Biblically, what is the age of the earth/universe? Is evolution true? What are we to make of the hominids? John Murphy has been asked to address these 3 questions with a church youth group and will share his responses with our chapter. Hopefully this will equip members with brief talking points which can be shared around the “water cooler” or with friends and/or family members.

Religious Pluralism
We live in a 'PC" society that tells us there is no objective truth, that all beliefs are equal, valid and simply a matter of opinion. But do all religious paths lead to the same place? How do we approach other cultures and religious beliefs with respect and gentleness while not compromising the Truth? What did Jesus and the apostles have to say on the subject? Come for a discussion forum where we can help each other strengthen our ability to engage others in a winsome way without compromising a Christian worldview.

Made in the Image of God
This talk describes the fundamental ways that humans are different in kind, not just degree, from any other animal species. It then contrasts the naturalists (evolutionary) worldview with the Biblical or Christian worldview. If one follows the evidence it is easy to see that the Christian worldview is consistent with the facts, makes the fewest number of assumptions and provides the best explanatory power and scope.

Who’s Afraid of the Multiverse?
Is the multiverse hypothesis science fiction, a plausible alternative to a God-created universe, or maybe even consistent with scripture? In this talk, Dr. Salviander used Dr. Jeff Zweerink’s booklet as a launching point to review the history of the multiverse, the different multiverse models, the scientific nature of the multiverse, and how the multiverse hypothesis may or may not fit in with scripture. Whatever you think of its validity, Christians should have a basic understanding of this increasingly mainstream idea which is often presented as a viable alternative to a purposeful creation.

Near Death Experiences: Survival of Consciousness following Clinical Death - Implications for Christian Apologetics
Some non-Christian thinkers are rejecting materialism (or naturalism) based on scholarly studies demonstrating the frequency, credibility and cross cultural consistency of near death experiences (e.g., the vivid out of body experiences of traumatized individuals, a review of one’s life, meeting with dead loved ones, and the Christ-like Light). Bob Davis will review these various studies on NDE, the non-materialist quantum physics explanation, the materialist explanation, the RTB position, and the two edged sword these findings bring to the defense of the Christian faith.

Clinical Depression as Evidence for Dualism
Depression is a common malady in society and now is recognized as a major source of dysfunction in the lives of many individuals. As with other conditions characterized as “mental illness” it is most often thought of from a naturalistic perspective as purely a neurochemical imbalance. However, treatment approaches that simply alter neurochemicals have a poor efficacy. Could depression therefore represent a condition of the “mind” or “spirit”, thereby supporting a dualist view of the existence of mankind? We’ll examine both current neurochemical theory and evidence that being “transformed by the renewing of one’s mind” (Romans 12:2) (an equally compelling and effective treatment option), and argue that man is just not a complex tangle of neutrons but is also a spiritual being.

Be Thou My Vision
For many people, ‘seeing is believing’. Visual proof is needed to verify and convince. Yet, for the writer of Hebrews and Christians, ‘faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.’ This is not a blind faith, but rather a sureness substantiated by experience of things beyond the natural world. A neuroscientist with training in the visual system, Dr. Jeter will give a primer on human vision – its anatomy, function, and limits. With interactive demonstrations, she will reveal its dominance over the other senses and how the visual brain centers can play tricks on us. Dr. Jeter will present cases of stroke patients who unknowingly can navigate around object despite being cortically blind. Thus, behavior can be guided by sensory information of which we have no conscious awareness. This evidence will segue into a discussion of how we can know that things exist beyond what we see.

The Roots of Postmodernism
The roots of Postmodernism are to be found centuries ago in Descartes, who is often considered the origin of the modern era in philosophy. Until Descartes, philosophers were primarily concerned with the metaphysical question of what constitutes reality. Descartes argued that we could not address that question before first considering the question of what we can know. But, to Descartes, to know something meant to be certain of it. Therefore, the quest for knowledge of reality was replaced by the quest for certainty. Descartes found his certainty through reason, but later philosophers who took up the same quest became convinced that certainty was unattainable. Consequently, they became increasingly skeptical, and eventually concluded that objective truth, itself, was unattainable. That conclusion leads ultimately to Postmodernism, which is not really a break with modernism but a natural consequence of it. My analysis concludes with two general responses to postmodernism. The first is to question its Cartesian roots, and the second is to question the Postmodernists reasons for believing anything, including Postmodernism.

The Challenge of Contingency
The concept of Historical Contingency within the evolutionary paradigm was described by the late Stephen J. Gould “…No finale can be specified at the start, none would ever occur a second time in the same way, because any pathway proceeds through thousands of improbable stages. Alter any early event, ever so slightly, and without apparent importance at the time, evolution cascades into a radically different channel.” The idea of Historical Contingency suggests that one powerful way to discriminate between the “appearance of design” that results from the evolutionary process and Intelligent Design is to determine if contingency is operating in the biological realm. If life is exclusively the result of evolutionary processes, then biologists should expect to see few, if any, cases in which evolution has “repeated” itself. This is simply not the case.

The Attention Schema – An Exploration in Cognition
Human cognition including memory and reasoning processes are a mystery but some of the latest research points to some interesting conclusions. I will be presenting information primarily from the book about human cognition by Dr. Michael Graziano called Consciousness and the Social Brain. In this book Dr. Graziano puts forward the concept of awareness known as “attention schema”. This is a theory of human attention, awareness and consciousness. The theory posits that the brain constructs and calculates informational models that represent the real world. These abbreviated models or schemas can be enhanced with experience, new information, emotion, memory recall and the like to predict outcomes and plan future actions.

DVD - Mysteries Examined: Quantum Apologetics
Once again this summer we will suspend the normal lecture style presentations and instead offer an educational series which relies on more conversational dialogue like one might find in a classroom setting. This month we will watch a portion of the RTB DVD Mysteries Examined. We will view a 55 minute program titled Quantum Apologetics. Research in quantum mechanics has led some scientists to speculate the universe created itself. Dr. Hugh Ross, along with two experts in the field, underscore the fact that the more people learn about quantum mechanics, the more evidence they uncover for the activity of a Divine Creator. Upon completion Dr. Salviander will lead the group in a discussion and Q&A in regard to many of the points raised in the presentation.

The Reasons to Believe (RTB) Creation Model
President Bob Davis will kick off the year by presenting an overview of the Reasons to Believe (RTB) Creation Model which will detail the following: (a) a description of what a model is, (b) a summary of the RTB model, and (d) a comparison of the track record (predictive success) of the RTB model against competing atheistic evolutionary and young-earth creation models. Because the RTB model is consistent with dual revelation (high view of scripture and science) this lecture should be educational for anyone wanting to know more about RTB.

Faith Floods and Fossils
Over the last 50 years, the church has been caught up in a Bible-geology conflict. All parties involved are creationists. The conflict is due to interpretation of Scripture and application of historical investigation of the Earth – geology. The Grand Canyon provides spectacular vistas of sedimentary rocks (5000 ft thick) made up of sandstone, limestone, and shale, sitting on top of igneous and metamorphic ricks. Do the rocks and fossils in the Grand Canyon indicate it was formed suddenly and recently or gradually over geologic time? I will show the evidence in the canyon to answer this question.

A Simple Analogy of Cellular Complexity: The Epigenetics of the breast cancer gene BRCA-1
Now that the human genome has been fully sequenced the study of the epigenetics of cellular function promises spectacular advances in medical science. The epigenetics—the “how’s, when’s, where’s and why’s” of DNA function– reveal an amazingly complex milieu of simultaneous chemical processes occurring “elbow to elbow” at the cellular level. Could these intricate and fine tuned systems have come about without the input of an intelligent designer?

The Origins of Life
Did life come from a Creator or from natural processes? Many believers contend that life came from supernatural creation by a Supreme Being, a Creator. Secular scientists have proposed several origins theories including the primordial soup, clay structures, “emergent properties,” panspermia and others. An overview of these theories and the evidence to support or discredit each will be presented.

Are the long-life spans detailed in Genesis scientifically credible?
The book of Genesis describes men who lived significantly extended life-spans. While this may be simply an example of God working through fiat miracle, current research now offers some tantalizing clues regarding how human longevity may be soon significantly extended. We will review current knowledge of why we age and die, offer some ideas as to how God may have subsequently limited life-spans, and explore how epigenetic and stem cell research may offer methodologies to defeat the aging process in the near future. Since God is the author of science, perhaps He harnessed and accentuated these biochemical pathways for the men of Genesis 5 and 11.

Synthetic Life
Synthetic biology offers the promise of next generation solutions to many of mankind’s most challenging issues. As an emerging field in the biological sciences, synthetic biology combines the fields of biology and engineering with the goal of designing and constructing novel life forms (synthetic life), which in turn may be utilized as biological factories. Has man actually created life? Are scientists playing God? What does it mean for intelligent design if man can create life? Following a brief introduction to synthetic biology, these questions will be considered.

Four Blood Moons
Upcoming astronomical events and the buzz from Bible prophecy harbingers. Between April 2014 and September 2015, the earth will experience four total lunar eclipses. Because of the darkened color of the moon, these are often referred to as blood moons. While eclipse are not unusual, having 4 total lunar events within a two-year period – all on Jewish feast days – is very unique. During this presentation, we will explore the historical events in Israel of past lunar events and what the harbingers are saying for Israel now. Opposing views from Bible scholars who say the blood moons are being sensationalized will also be reviewed.

A small group study led by Dr. Dennis Wilson
Everyone knows the Bible teaches scientific nonsense”—that’s the commonly held misconception. When pushed for examples, skeptics point to the early part of Genesis, with stories of creation, the flood, and 900-year life spans as “proof.” Examining recent scientific discoveries, astronomer and pastor Dr. Hugh Ross explores the opening chapters in Genesis and shows how they hold some of the strongest scientific evidence for the Bible’s supernatural accuracy. Navigating Genesis expands upon Ross’ earlier book The Genesis Question (1998), integrating the message of both the Bible and science—without compromise—giving skeptics and believers common ground for dialogue. We will be reviewing Chapters 1-3 of the book A Scientist’s Journey through Genesis 1–11 by Dr. Hugh Ross. Members are encouraged to purchase the book and read the chapters beforehand.

The ENCODE Project: Further Evidence For A Designer
The first draft sequence of the human genome was published in 2001 and estimated that only 1 percent of the human genome consisted of functional DNA sequences, with the remaining 99% being loosely classified as junk DNA. Recently, however, the ENCODE Project has shown that 80% of the human genome is biochemically functional. These findings serve to stifle common descent models and argue for an elegantly choreographed genome displaying sophistication in control, architecture and operation.

Humanity’s Big Bang
Dr. Wilson will look at evidence from archeology, anthropology and genetics to show that modern human behavior originated abruptly about 50,000 years ago. After that, anatomical evolution all but ceased, while behavioral evolution accelerated dramatically. About 10,000 years ago, the first domestication of animals occurred followed by agriculture about 8000 years ago. Finally, about 6000 years ago there was an explosion of inventions, innovation and knowledge, which resulted in advanced civilizations most notably in Mesopotamia. We will examine the possible causes of this process, which has been termed as the “Great Leap Forward” or the “Socio-Cultural Big Bang” and show that the most logical explanation is Special Creation.
